“Deep Vulnerability”: Identifying the Structural Dimensions of Climate Vulnerability through Qualitative Research in Argentina, Canada, and Colombia

Extreme climate events are becoming more frequent and severe due to change. Vulnerability extremes is the result of three components: exposure hazards, sensitivity system, capacity adapt. A large-scale qualitative study rural vulnerability in Argentina, Canada, Colombia demonstrates political-economic root causes each context. Structural difficult identify using quantitative indices deductive metrics alone, but approaches can help key drivers at a deeper level. Technology diversification insufficient address such structural or “deep” vulnerability.
